The real role of Free Women in Gorean society is one of the most misinterpreted aspects on Gor. This misunderstanding is constantly being revived by various factors. First of all, by the language in most books that all women should be slaves. Second, a cursory reading of the books reveals that almost all of the important characters of free women, who are often haughty, end up as slaves. And third, there is the myth that male dominance on Gor is absolute. These three reasons combine to twist the reader's view of the free women of Gor. It is only through a deeper study of the Books of Gor that one understands the true complexity of the role of free women on Gor. They are far more than potential slaves.
The vast majority of women on Gor are free women. Only 2-3% of all women are actually slaves. This statistic alone speaks volumes about the status of free women in Gorean society. Despite all the rhetoric, Goreans do not fall into such platitudes and enslave most of their wives. They don't even enslave a significant proportion of their wives. There must be compelling reasons to support this attitude. Free women must be able to fill important roles that slave women cannot fill. The demand for these roles must exceed the demand for slaves.

"I am a free woman," she said. "I can speak as I please."
I could not gainsay her in this. She was free. She could, accordingly, say what she wished, and without requiring permission.
Mercenaries of Gor
It was a muggy day, the morning sun scorching the desert sands with great heat, when I pulled the caravan to Scimitar in the Oasis of the Two, and happily accepted Ambassador Trygg Tyran's warm invitation to the En'Var Festival.
Full of excitement we moved into the city, which I was allowed to enter for the first time, since negotiations had previously taken place with the gates open.
Only citizens and residents are allowed to enter the city without permission from the administrator Strada Tyran.
Built on a vast oasis, the city was admirable and the streets were already bustling with activity as people from all over the world flocked in their boxy, colorful tunics to the arena, which served as a fairground and stage. Kajirii, with their shapely bodies and in their white baggy Shalwar trousers held up by black ribbons, bustled busily and excitedly through the crowd.
Trygg Tyran calls out to the crowd. "Tal and greetings, Civitatii, residents, and property of the Oasis, honored guests and friends and trading partners. Welcome to the Oasis of Two Scimitars En'Var Festival, 10,173! I will make just a few announcements before we bring out the Sultry Boys of the NICE dance troupe."
"We urge you, if you haven't already done so, to walk through the Scimitars gallery to see the En'Var exhibition, 'The Arabian Nights', based on the legends of earth, a celebration of the desert and the legends that are inspired by it and in it. It is a wonderful exhibition, curated by our Head Physician, Jackson Sirius Wolfe!"
"We have imported a most progressive and unusual contraption for your pleasure, which is just inside the arena. Known as a KA-RO-SEL and discovered on the sketch pad of Miss Evelyn Wise when she was brought on a voyage of acquisition to Gor, will be available for your pleasure throughout the festival.
Built by the Gorean Caste of Builders, ride around on replicas of kaiilas and bosks, powered by slaves turning a large crank which causes the platform to spin round and round. Energy bulbs give the contraption a festive look and a band provides music for the ride. Come enjoy the ka-ro-sel, the remarkable work of the Caste of Builders."
"Welcome, one and all, to the first day of the Two Scimitars En'Var festival. Now we will have entertainment, as the NICE dancers present "The Sultry Boys" The dancers are Aliden and Mec, kennel slaves of Gortuga; Lokie, of the House of Kailiuk of Port Kar, and Jaryd, owned by Sanji Cobb of Lydius."
smiles as he weaves a descriptive tale to set the mood. "Imagine a beautiful, sultry day in the Tahari. The tavern keeper Zack has invited well known dancers to entertain his guests. The sexy boys are charged with dazzling the free with their performance of humor and dance.... Let's take a look... "
Sir Trygg Tyran Ambassador Sir ] Zack Dakken
Zack Dakken : "Good evening and welcome to the Happy Shark! This evening, you are all in for a treat as I have searched high and low for the best entertainment! I have found the most savory of beasts for you and this evening, they will dance for you! Feast your eyes on my boys!" Makes a grand ol gesture towards the slaves as he moves away to sit.

Just in time for the announced event, Sir Trygg appeared on the stage and welcomed the people, friends and guests, gave a short speech and opened the festival.
A graceful kajrii dance with singing followed
At the last dance, the audience held its breath, the boys held huge fans in their hands, which they twisted and waved, their bodies moving in a combative rhythm to the tahari sounds of the musicians.
It was close to a miracle that none of the boys got hurt.
After the last chords, Sir Trygg entered the stage again and invited everyone to eat and drink, a rich buffet of numerous delicious dishes and drinks delight our eyes and taste buds.
So the day drew to a close and we went to the inn for the night, for tomorrow will bring a new Event.
Aliden Steele saunters to the middle of the tables smiling coyly to those in the tavern. "Tal ta ye free and slaves.Me thinks it be a good day fer me ta share wit ye a story I heard by a master one day, It be a sad day fer him as he had a plight he be needin' ta face. Me did find it most unfortunate indeed"
Aliden rubs my chin a moment as I look upon the free. I waited to see if I had their attention. Walks around with a bit of a spring in my step. My arms freely swinging by my side. Once I was sure I did I began.... "Me master's tale be goin' sometin' like this.....
My Noonkie days are over
My Piolet Light is out.
What used to be my sex Appeal
is now my water spout!
Time was when, on it's own,
from my trousers it would spring.
But now it's just a full time job
to find the fucking thing!
chuckles at the boy's poem
It used to be embarrassing
the way it would behave,
for every single morning....
It would stand and watch me shave!
Now as old age approaches,
It sure gives me the blues.
To see it hang it's little head
and watch me tie my shoes.
"Me poor master. I nay sure what dis poor lad gonna do..." Shakes my head as I pause a moment. "It be de day us slaves fear, as there be nay anytin' they can do. Today me en me lads will dance fer ye delight as de musicians play."

"We are jist gettin' warmed up. Lets show dese masters what we got!"
Shake it boys
Aliden now sit tight masters. Fer we gonna amaze ye with a dance never seen before. The dance of the deadly fans. " The boys pick up fans and start twirling them to warm up before the music starts..
Lokie walks over quickly and pick sup fans... then moves back to position quietly panting a bit
[Trygg Tyran nods, impressed, and he smiles slyly as the slaves wriggle and strut their stuff. He applauds wildly "Well done boys" but stops at the mention of deadly fans, concerned about liability if any of the boys are injured
The boys drop their fans
Aliden Steele : "Thank ye free en slaves. Me hope ye enjoyed de show. Me be wantin' ta thank Master Ambassador and de Arts Counsel for envitin' us."
Trygg Tyran: "Well done boys!" as he applauds. A fine display, most pleasing. Let's hear it again for the Sultry Boys of NICE!"
"Now you are all invited to join us for a grand feast, laid out by Storm, the tavern keeper of our tavern, the Aurora Gorealis tavern and inn, and ride the KA-RO-SEL if you dare! So eat drink and be merry, and be sure to come back tomorrow for more entertainment and excitement, including a temple service to honor the Priest Kingsat En'Var; a dance by Herlit, the Blessed One's boy, which is sure to please; and the premiere of a remarkable new work by Timmi String, "Narcissus", which will be performed at the Scimitars bath. But for now, eat, drink and be merry!"
Day 2
The next morning the streets of the city were bustling with activity.
Smells of various spices mingled with the smells of Tahari cuisine.
Around noon, everyone flocked to the temple of the initiates, where Ambassador Sir Trygg opened the ceremony for the second En Var Festival punctually:
"Welcome good people of Scimitars, welcome on this joyous day of En'Var, the Summer Solstice, the festival of the Triumph of the Light of Priest-Kings. Happy En'Var!"
"We have planned a remarkable day for your edification and enjoyment, starting with a remarkable service. Happy Envar to all!"
The temple is decorated with rich garlands and bouquets of summer flowers. Candles and fires in the darkness herald the triumph of the sun at its zenith on the approaching longest day of the year. Near the altar is a table with bloodless offerings of summer fruit and flowers appropriate to the season. The faithful people of the city gather before the temple in the cool dark just before dawn on the longest day of the year. The High Initiate and his Second Initiate are dressed in their finest ceremonial robes and wear flower garlands to celebrate the festival. The choir awaits within the temple.
The preparatory rituals and cleansing in front of the temple began before everyone went to the temple for worship.
Bell-clear voices rang out in chorus praising these immortal Priest-Kings.
After the mass, everyone went back to the arena where a Kajrius named Herlit performed a fire dance. After that, the performance of two more dances by this Kajirus was moved to the bathhouse in the oasis.
The spectators roared and cheered the pardoned the dancer, whose steely body moved like a feather in the wind to the sounds of the musicians.
The Service of Initiates The Ritual of the Initiates The Temple is decorated with rich garlands and bouquets of summer flowers. The choir await within the temple. The HIGH INITIATE turns to the people gathered for the ritual and says to them: "On this longest day of the year, the triumph of the Light of Priest-Kings, let us gather here to honor the Holy Ones and thank them for their protection against all the evils of the world." BOTH INITIATES face the people standing in front of the temple. The HIGH INITIATE gestures to the slave standing beside it, and the bar at the foot of the temple steps rings out. Tariq ibn Joshao al Samini raises his Voice."Rejoice all you people, for today Lar-Torvis triumphs on the longest day of the year! Let us give thanks to Priest-Kings, the Holy Ones!" "Rejoice all you people, for today Lar-Torvis triumphs on the longest day of the year! Let us give thanks to Priest-Kings, the Holy Ones!" "Rejoice all you people, for the power of Priest-Kings, our sure defense and shield, shows itself forth today in the victory of the Tor-Tu-Gor! May the strength of Priest-Kings bring us the victory against every threat!" "Rejoice all you people, for the beneficent glory of Priest-Kings shines forth like the sun, bestowing their gifts to all their people.""Be reverent before Priest-Kings, and honor them in the temple." The choir chants from the interior of the temple.."For it is good to pray to the Immortal Ones at the Festival of En'Var." The HIGH INITIATE picks up the golden bowl of sacred chrism and steps over to where the SACRISTAN Slave kneels at the base of the steps. The SACRISTAN Slave rises to his feet. The HIGH INITIATE traces a circle on the slave's forehead, saying, "Priest-Kings, holy and mighty, purify this slave's mind and will to your service, and that of your Blessed Caste, so that this slave may be perfect before you, and worthy to enter into Your sacred temple The SACRISTAN Slave holds out his hands, palms upward, and the HIGH INITIATE traces another circle with the consecrated oil on each of the slave's palms, saying, "Priest-Kings, holy and mighty, purify this slave's body to your service, and that of your Blessed Caste, so that this slave may be made perfect before you and worthy to enter into Your sacred temple." He sets down the chrism bowl and signs the slave with the Circle of Priest-Kings, then steps back up next to the temple door on the side opposite the SECOND INITIATE. Ehsan, the Kajirus rises steadily to his feet, heart rapidly beating in his chest, his hands extend outwards palms up. Eyes glass with pride at the gesture and honor. He holds out his hands, palms upward, and the SECOND INITIATE traces another circle with the consecrated oil on each of the slave's palms, saying, "Priest-Kings, holy and mighty, purify this slave's body to your service, and that of your Blessed Caste, so that this slave may be made perfect before you and worthy to enter into Your sacred temple." He sets down the chrism bowl and signs the slave with the Circle of Priest-Kings, then steps back up next to the temple door on the side opposite the High Initiate. The SACRISTAN Slave picks up the thurible and walks into the temple. He circles the outer section, swinging the smoking incense burner, then goes up to the white railing and censes the altar through it, bowing before the golden circle before continuing. He then walks over o take his place as leader of the choir. Ehsan turns to the High Initiate standing at the entrance and censes him, then the Second Initiate. He censes the people before the temple. As soon as the thurifer has completed his censing of the temple, and Ehsan, the Free waiting outside, the voices of the Temple singing slaves begin a joyful chant calling out to Priest-Kings to attend the celebration. The HIGH INITIATE bows before the golden Circle over the altar, then raises his hands in adoration to the Eternal Circle. He then turns to the lavabo bowl by the entrance, rinses his hands in the water of purification and dries them by passing them over the flame of sanctification as he chants: "Priest-Kings, Immortal Ones, purify me, I pray you so that I may rightly enter into your sacred Temple for this holy ritual on the day of En'Var." : The HIGH INITIATE returns to face the water bowl, and chants: "This holy dawn, purify my mind, that I may know your Truth and proclaim it. This holy dawn, purify my heart, that I may show your love and mercy to all. This holy dawn, purify my hands, that I may help and heal all who are in any need. This holy dawn, purify my ears, that I may hear your voice and obey This holy dawn, purify my feet, that I may walk in the way you have set for me to follow. This holy day of En'Var, purify my whole being from any uncleanness in the blinding radiance of your Victory of Light." The HIGH INITIATE bows, and dips his fingertips once more into the blessed water in the bowl. He touches his lips so that his mouth may be purified to speak the words at the altar of the Holy Ones, saying, HIGH INITIATE "Priest-Kings most holy, most mighty, most glorious, make me clean before you, so that no profane thoughts may turn me from the flawless contemplation of your Will. and no impure act defile my complete obedience to the sacred laws under which you have set me. This sacred Day and always, accept my service before your altar, and make me truly your blessed one, that I may perfectly serve your Will. Hear me, Priest-Kings!" He steps to the other side of the temple door and waits. Kailek, the second Initiate, bows to the Circle, dips his fingers in the Lavabo bowl and touches his lips so that his mouth may be purified to speak the words at the altar of the Holy Ones, saying,"Priest-Kings most holy, most mighty, most glorious, make me clean before you, so that no profane thoughts may turn me from the flawless contemplation of your Will. and no impure act defile my complete obedience to the sacred laws under which you have set me. This sacred Day and always, accept my service before your altar, and make me truly your blessed one, that I may perfectly serve your Will. Hear me, Priest-Kings!" The SECOND INITIATE steps to the side of the temple door opposite where the High Initiate is standing. Tariq .the High Initiate, turns once more toward the plaza in front of the temple, and makes a gesture of warding. He says, "May nothing unworthy of you, O Holy Ones, enter into this, your sacred space. Kailek turns to the gathered people once more and raises his voice. "Come with their favor, as their people, into the Temple of Priest-Kings, to do them honor this holy day." The TWO INITIATES walk into the temple, the High Initiate first, followed by the Second Initiate and then by Ehsan, who kneels at the left of the temple in front of the white railing.. The two initiates walk through the gate in the Railing, and stand side by side facing the altar and the Sardar Mountains, home of Priest-Kings. Kailek: "Waxing and waning, living and dying, all things are yours, Priest-Kings, and obey you, You sustain them within the Eternal Circle that makes your Wholeness and completes it." Tariq ibn Joshao al Samini: "All things are born out of darkness: darkness of the womb, darkness of Midwinter. They circle to darkness again, as the day gives way to night, As men go at last to darkness in the Cities of Dust, and as the year turns, All things, emerging out of darkness, grow upward toward the light of the Central Fire. All are part of your universal Circle, holy Priest-Kings. You hold us all in your hands." Kailek: "Now, at Midsummer, against all darkness, we celebrate the victory of your Light Triumphant." Tariq ibn Joshao al Samini: "Now, when life leaps, in the green lands, most lushly toward its climax, Now, when Lar-Torvis's rays, on this longest day of the year, Are so strong and fierce in our Tahari that they lie on us like a crushing weight; Now, when the very air glows incandescent with your Light at midday -- "Kailek: "With all living things, the work of your invisible power and skill, We offer before you in this great Festival, the praise and honor due your name. With the raised arms and adoring voices of your anointed ones, your Initiates, Sworn spokesmen and interpreters of your commands, holy Priest-Kings, as you have ordained it." Tariq:"Now we offer you these gifts, holy Priest-Kings, asking that you will guard us with your invincible power and grant us our necessities. Send us success in all our proper endeavors." BOTH INITIATES turn to face the offering table. The HIGH INITIATE presents the offerings to Priest-Kings for the people. As the temple choir raise their voices in a hymn of appeal to Priest-Kings, the High Initiate casts a measure of incense into the brazier on the altar, and as the flame flares up in the fire-bowl, he gestures toward the decorated tray which holds the bloodless En'Var offerings of salt, pure water, summer fruits, and colorful midsummer flowers, saying: HIGH INITIATE "Let my prayers rise like this incense to the Sardars, as your people, O Priest-Kings, offer these gifts to you, asking that you will hear them and grant their petitions. May these offerings be acceptable to you, and may you send us your favor in return." The HIGH INITIATE casts a pinch of golden Scimitars salt into the flame, saying, "Receive this pure salt of the Oasis of Two Scimitars, holy Priest-Kings, that as it purifies all things, preserves them from decay, and binds men together in brotherhood, so we may be purified of all that is unclean before you, preserved from all danger, and bound to you by your benevolent power." As the salt is consumed the choir sings, "Accept this offering of purifying salt, holy Priest-Kings! We give you a gift, give to us your favor." Next, the HIGH INITIATE sprinkles a few drops of living water brought from the Scimitars waterfall into the flame, saying: "Receive this pure water from the oasis of Scimitars, water which is our life, holy Priest-Kings, that all our lives may be made yours, and lived according to your Will." As the water sizzles and evaporates, the choir sings, "Accept this offering of life-giving water, holy Priest-Kings! We give you a gift; give to us your favor." Next, the HIGH INITIATE drops a small fresh date from the plate of fresh fruit into the flame, saying, "Receive this date from our oasis orchards, Holy Ones. Grant that the flavor of our life may be as sweet as this succulent fruit we give you. May we be fed by your hand, and all that we need provided by your gift." As the fruit is consumed in the flame, the choir sings, "Accept this offering of sustaining food from our lands, holy Priest-Kings! We give you a gift; give to us your favor." Finally, the HIGH INITIATE picks up one of the flowers on the platter of offerings, and drops it into the fire, saying, "Receive this summer blossom from the gardens of Scimitars, holy Priest-Kings: a bright-colored bud growing out of the darkness of the winter ground, a bloom watered in the Light of spring by your blessed gift of our Oasis pool, a flower flourishing golden now in summer, in the midst of barren desert sands." "So may our hearts bloom, rejoicing in the beauty that surrounds us always, even in the driest and most desolate places. Send us, we beg you, peace and joy, that we may live together in loyal friendship, as members of the Oasis of Two Scimitars." As the flower disappears into the flame, the choir sings, "Accept this offering of living beauty, O Holy Ones. We give you a gift; give to us your favor." When the last of the offerings has been consumed in the sacrificial fire, the High Initiate raises his hands again to the golden circle above the altar and chants: "Oh holy Priest-Kings, now send Your blessing upon us all, like sunshine on the fertile soil of an oasis garden, That your people, now green and growing, on this longest day of the year, May come to harvest, according to your will, At the time and place you have prepared for us." Kailek: "All praise to you, Priest-Kings, holy and mighty, on this, your holy day!" The HIGH INITIATE completes the ceremony by casting another handful of incense into the brazier on the altar, then, turning to the congregation, he blesses them with the sign of the circle of Priest-Kings, and says: "Go forth now rejoicing, all you faithful servants of Priest-Kings, Under the shield of their power, secure in their Victory of Light, to the Festival of En'Var. Dance for joy in the sunshine; celebrate the Light!" "Ta Sardar Gor!" Kailek turns to face the people and repeats: " Ta Sardar Gor! Give Praise to the Holy Ones!" The choir burst into the final joyous hymn as the initiates walk slowly through the white railing and out the door of the temple. Outside the temple, BOTH INITIATES bless the faithful slaves gathered outside. Kailek: "Blessing upon you....""Blessing upon you, happy En'var""Blessings upon you ROE...Happy En'var" : "Blessing upon you. Happy En'var."
The Dances of Kajirus Herlit Dance 1 Fire & Ice ~ A Triumph of Light!" Herlit ventures forward slowly, in fear of pursuit, muscles tense, and the cold flows through my entire body. The images of the escape deeply burned into my eyes, the burning city, my beloved Master wrapped in his magnificent cloak fighting his way free, the dying men around him. The torch in my hand casts a faint light and the warmth of the flame only slowly fights its way through the cold of the darkness. Having fled the battle, I race across the frozen ground.. My bare feet feel the ice under their soles, cold and yet a burning. He tries to perceive with my ears what my eyes are deprived of by the darkness. Only the ice around me glitteringly reflects the dancing torchlight. Is this cold, this ice real or just a reflection of the cold that gripped my heart and soul when my beloved Master and seemingly also my brother were cruelly torn into death before my eyes, stabbed by swords that reflected the burning walls of my beloved city? The Dancing Kajirus perceives shadowy movements. My own shadow from the torchlight, or the shadow of darkness that separated me from what had given meaning to my existence? Am I shivering because of the cold, or is it fear? Undaunted, I move forward, in the direction that the unknown man had pointed out to me, in the direction that promises light, warmth and new happiness. Herlit crosses the next small hill and before my eyes a mountain rises, immersed in the first light of the rising sun, a first ray that makes my tanned skin really sparkle. The first warmth, which is already generated by this still weak light, reaches my body and the energy and joy of life begins to flow in me and plunges the burning torch into a snowbank, and discard the dead, smoking shaft. The fire of the sun replaces the fire of the torch and I look around once more, leaving ice, cold and fear behind. With large steps it drives me now in the direction of the light, the life, the strength and the future. My body absorbs the rays of the light, now like a fire, and my muscles shine in this light of power. Stops abruptly and tries to see the image in the distance clearly despite the fiery light. Can this be, or is my perception clouded by the long night full of ice and cold? From the circle of fire of the now glistening sun, my beloved brother emerges, whom I had presumed dead. Shivers of joy and happiness flow through my body as I run toward my brother with quick steps. He feels deep inside the inner light of love, tears stream down.. My brother is alive, escaped the cruel death and I sink on my knees with happiness. My inner fire of happiness can also melt the ice around my soul that had arisen from the loss of our Master. Wrapped in happiness, light and warmth. Herlit remain on hisknees, thanking the Priest Kings. Together, we will go forward, facing whatever comes. ----------------------------------------- The spectators roar, the applause doesn't end and shouts of bravo fill the arena. Two other notable dances were performed in the bathhouse in the Oasis by this gifted Kajirus who is called Herlit!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
